“A person’s affiliation with a spiritual community can have the most powerful influence on self-concept. The ideals of the spiritual community define the nature and destiny of the human, and organize at a higher plane the experiences of the physical and mental communities. Membership in a particular spiritual community can either nullify or validate the processes of the less powerful communities. If the boundaries of the physical community are set by some geographical border and boundaries of the mental community are defined by a certain knowledge or set of ideas, then the boundaries or the spiritual community are as broad as can be conceived. They are usually expressed in the infinite image of God.” from a paper entitled Community Psychology and Systems Intervention by Na’im Akbar, Rashad Saafir and Dorothy Granberry.

As long as we accept the Eurocentric notion of individualism, an idea which runs counter to the thinking and experiences of our African ancestors, we are subject to all the consequences which are the outgrowth of individualism. Individualism posits the soul personality is separate and distinct from all creation. Inherent in this idea is the belief one is estranged and alienated from not only the CREATOR of the universe but also the greater ecosystem, the immediate environment, nature and our fellow humans. If we are to be truly free we must restructure our thinking about ourselves, what it means to be human and redefine ourselves by reconnecting with our African cosmologies and cosmogony. Having been programmed by racist ideology and inundated by white supremacist anti-African propaganda we have been psychologically as well as physically disconnected from our African culture, world view and cosmologies. This culturally induced disconnection has exacerbated our cultural amnesia, our loss of self-identity, self-knowledge and sense of impotence. The key to our redemption and empowerment is to unite on the basis of our oppression at the hands of Caucasians (Arabs and Europeans). We must pull the blindfolds off our eyes and our psyches. Liberation is not a gift it must be taken! The first step towards liberation is to decolonize our minds and to link with liberation minded brothers and sisters desirous of freedom to form dynamic communities willing to do whatever is necessary to accomplish our goal of self and group actualization.

In their paper Community Psychology and Systems Intervention by African centered psychologists Na’im Akbar, Rashad Saafir and Dorothy Granberry featured in the book African Psychology in Historical Perspective and Related Commentary edited by Daudi Ajani ya Azibo they define the various communities, physical, mental and spiritual, pointing out the nsignificance and benefits of empowered ethnocentric communities and how to best intervene to bring about healing and transformation. Our freedom will not be given to us by beneficent others, our freedom can only be attained by us for us. Only when we decide its really freedom time will we be motivated to begin the arduous journey to self-actualization and freedom. As long as we are content to acquiesce to Eurocentric white supremacists indoctrination or anaesthetize ourselves with substances and pop culture diversions to deaden the pain of being in an anti-African environment, we will never be free. Only when we love ourselves enough to believe we deserve to be free, love ourselves enough to transcend our fears, rise up and shake off the psychological chains and spiritual fetters of our culturally induced enslavement will we make our freedom a reality. Yes we must do it one at a time but we must also have a support network, a community of self loving freedom loving Africans willing to come together to heal ourselves and alter our reality. We are not impotent we are powerful beings, our adversaries have merely implanted the false belief in our minds that we are weak and powerless. The same energy that created and animates the stars gives us life. The same intelligence that guides the universe preventing galaxies from crashing into each other, that designed caterpillars to morph into butterflies resides within us and is available to us! If this message resonates with you, we have the beginning of a mental community, we share the same beliefs. If we build upon these ideas that we have agency and power, that we are not separated from the creative source of he universe we have the making of a spiritual community. If we are willing to link together and work towards our mutual enlightenment and betterment we have indeed plant the seeds for our liberation. Our enemies fear our strength and unity, that is why they spend so much time and effort trying to titillate and distract us with materialism, hedonism and bling-bling. This is why they keep us at each other’s throats and try to make us believe lies about ourselves: that we are powerless, ugly and worthless. The truth is we are mighty, beautiful and divine. Once we truly believe this and act like it is true, we will manifest this truth it in our environment.
